Introduction
The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care provides perioperative and intensive care services for patients mainly from Putrajaya, Klang Valley, Sabah and Sarawak and also throughout the country, functioning as a referral center for Breast and Endocrine.


Vision
Our vision is to provide the highest standard of anesthetics, intensive care, pain management and related services for the community and to successfully integrate this with all the other clinical disciplines of the hospital, in a manner that is holistic, humanitarian and patient-centered with an emphasis on human dignity, in tandem with this being a pain free hospital and a Regional Endocrine Center.


Mission
a) To provide anesthetics, intensive care and related services of high quality and consistent with established high standards of care.
b) To increase awareness among patients and other caregivers about anesthesia and the role anesthetists play in their treatment and eventual recovery.
c) To actively carry out Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the staff of the department inclusive of doctors, nurses and paramedics as we believe that CPD activities will eventually translate into high standards of patient care.
d) To promote good teamwork and excellent working relationships among all members of the department.
e) To carry out continuous quality improvement activities so that it becomes a tool for improving the standard of services and is institutionalized in the department.
f) To encourage and promote clinical research.


The scope of anesthetic services provided by our department include the following:
a) Operation theatre: Anesthesia for elective and emergency surgery for general surgical and subspecialty surgical services.
b) Anesthetic Clinic: pre-operative evaluation for patients.
c) Obstetric anesthesia and Labour analgesia ( Epidural).
d) Acute pain services to cater for post operative pain relief.
e) Intensive care service.
f) Daycare.

Anesthetic Services
The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care provides a wide range of anesthetic services to facilitate procedures for the multi-disciplinary surgical units at the Hospital Putrajaya. Operation Theatre Complex consists of nine operation rooms fully equipped with modern and latest anesthetic machines computerized critical care information system.

Anesthetic Clinic
The anesthetic clinic provides pre-anesthetic consultation and optimization of patients from all the surgical specialties in view of the increasing demand for operative medical care. It is located on the 1st floor of the main building at the same level as the OT and ICU. Consultation is provided by a specialist anesthetist together with a medical officer. On referral by the primary team, the anesthetic clinic provides a thorough assessment of the patient, liaising with the necessary specialties for consultation and optimization of the patient at specialist level well before the planned surgery and this has tremendously helped in reducing cancellations due to poorly optimized patients.

Obstetrics Analgesia
The Operation theatre is closely connected with the Labour suite, Neonatal intensive Care Unit (NICU) , Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Daycare center. There is a dedicated obstetric theater which operates daily from 8am till 5pm.

Obstetrics Analgesia Service
The Obstetric Analgesia Service (OAS) is an integral part of Acute Pain Service in Hospital Putrajaya. A specialist Anesthetist, Medical Officer and nursing staff are always available to provide the best of care. Epidural service is given to patients in labour upon request and on referral.

Acute Pain Service

The Acute Pain Service (APS) serves to manage mainly postoperative pain. It is an organized service where we have a Specialist Anesthetist, a medical officer and specialized APS nurses. Patients are mainly selected from the daily elective operating lists and from the emergency operations. The service is operational 24hours daily. Patients are reviewed regularly and ensured that they are receiving adequate pain relief and are satisfied with the service. The Nursing Observation Forms are also reviewed and keyed into the computer. As part of our continuous audit and data collection, details about the patient, the technique used and amount of drug used; pain scores, complications and side effects are recorded electronically. This database is used to assist us as part of the quality improvement activities to help us achieve an excellent standard of care.

Intensive Care Unit

This is a multi-disciplinary eleven bedded Intensive Care Unit situated on the first floor, directed and headed by a highly qualified and experienced anesthetist, assisted by senior specialists and medical officers. The service is provided 24 hours and supported by trained intensive care nursing staff and medical assistants to ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care.

Day Care Unit
The department also provides care for patients that undergo admissions on day of surgery from various surgical departments. Department training and research activities. The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care of Hospital Putrajaya encourages study and research activities and is committed to provide comprehensive, dynamic and continuous training and education to our staff.
