Drinking Water Quality Surveillance Program (KMAM) is a quality control program that supplied drinking water to the public water by the authorities / local agencies and the private sector. The program was conducted by the Water Quality Control Unit, Department of Health City Hall. Beginning in January 2010, the Department of Health Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya began to take over the program. Among the agencies involved are SYABAS, Department of Chemistry and Department of Environment.
Main objective of this program is to improve the health status of Kuala Lumpur to ensure the safety and quality of water supplied by the water suppliers are safe and in compliance with national drinking water standards. In addition, this program is also very useful as a mechanism that can detect possible outbreaks of waterborne disease in the early stages.
The scope of activities for Drinking Water Quality Surveillance Program conducted by the Department of Health Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya under the Division of Public Health is the monitoring of the quality of water supplied by the SYABAS only. Up to now, there are five main water sources that supply water to the people of Kuala Lumpur. Among them are:
Course 1 – Sg Langat
Course 2 – Loji Rawatan Air Bukit Nanas
Course 3 – Sg Batu
Course 6 – Sg Selangor
Course 7 – Loji Wangsa Maju
- Monitoring - Water sampling is carried out every week for microbiological analysis and physical and chemical analysis of every month for the sampling schedule provided at the beginning of the year. All samples were sent to Chemistry Department Malaysia in Petaling Jaya for analysis except for the physical parameters are carried out in-site test. In the event of violation, especially for microbiological parameters and residual chlorine water supplier will be notified immediately for corrective action.
- Sanitary Survey - Sanitary survey activities carried out on a water supply system that includes research in the catchment area, water treatment plant and in the reticulation. In this research, investigation and evaluation of all the things in the water supply system such as environmental conditions, pollution sources, tools and techniques are used that will affect the quality of the water produced will be identified and at the same time, the proposal-recommendations for correction will be outlined if any. This activity also involves a number of agencies such as the Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS), Department of Environment (DOE) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).
- Data Processing and Evaluation - The data and all information related to the activities will be stored and analyzed by a computerized system that WQS Program (Water Quality Surveillance) aimed at preparing the report, the increase in operations and management, and for corrective action and recovery.
- Remedial Action - Any violation occurring quality will be notified to the manufacturer's water and corrective actions and recovery should be done immediately in accordance with protocols and procedures that have been set and agreed.
